Mozambique is in eastern Africa and is not landlocked. To start planning, keep three points in mind: Maputo, Portuguese and the Mozambican metical. These facts help you get your bearings; they are not an up-to-date guide to transport links or services.
Location and capital
The capital is Maputo, identified as the country’s capital city. It can be a useful starting point for your research, but these details are not enough to plan travel within Mozambique: check current connections and conditions before finalising your itinerary.
Language and currency
Portuguese is listed as the country’s language, and its currency is the Mozambican metical (MZN; symbol MT). Note these names as you prepare, so you can make sense of practical information. No exchange rates or details on accepted payment methods are provided here; check both close to your travel date.
What to check before you go
The available listing for Maputo Airport gives the code MPM, but warns that its information may be out of date. It does not confirm current flights, airlines or operations. Check directly with current sources before buying your ticket, and recheck any requirements or services that may change.
