Geographic and practical orientation

The Netherlands, its Caribbean territories and where Amsterdam fits

The Netherlands, the Kingdom of the Netherlands and Amsterdam refer to different scales. Distinguishing them helps you decide what information to look for before planning your trip.

When you start planning, it helps to distinguish the Netherlands from the Kingdom of the Netherlands and from its capital, Amsterdam. The country is in Western Europe, has a coastline and also has territories in the Caribbean. Clarifying your exact destination helps prevent information about one area from being applied to another.
01

Three names, three scales

The Netherlands is one of the four constituent countries of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The Kingdom includes territories in the Caribbean, so a search about the Kingdom may cover a broader area than a visit to the European country. Before looking up information, identify which of these scales matches your plans.

02

Amsterdam helps you get oriented; your itinerary defines the country

Amsterdam is the capital of the Netherlands and a useful point of reference, but it is not synonymous with the country and does not determine your itinerary. If your plans include other places, check the information for each specific destination rather than assuming that details about the capital apply across the whole country.

03

Language, currency and checks

Dutch is the language listed for the country, and its currency is the euro. These are useful, stable starting points, but they do not answer practical questions that may change. Before departure, check official sources for entry requirements and current information about transport, services and visiting conditions.

04

Turn basic orientation into a useful search

First decide whether your trip is limited to the European Netherlands or includes the Kingdom’s Caribbean territories. Then specify the cities or areas you want to visit and look up information for each one.
